i feel the need to explain why i was buying sutton a can of pumpkin...i've been making sutton's baby food for the past few months. it's lots of fun and i'm sure saves lots of money (though i've only ever bought one jar of baby food, so i don't know how much we're saving). i like to use organic whenever i can, and i do use premade baby cereal, applesauce, and canned pureed pumpkin to make life easier sometimes.
i just puree a bunch of steamed veggies or soft fruit and freeze it in this ice cube tray then transfer it to ziplock bags. then you just thaw (in fridge or microwave) what you need for each meal. each cube is right at one ounce, which makes it easy. we are giving sutton mostly table foods now (unless chris and i aren't eating as healthy as i like my baby to!) and we didn't start him on baby food until 6 months, so i really only had to make his food for about 3 months.
i know it's not for everyone, but i had so much fun doing it i thought i would share the things i loved about making baby food:
1. we always had lots of extra fruits and veggies on hand, so chris and i were eating better
2. each cube is just 1 ounce, so it's easy to mix flavors (and vitamins and minerals) and give baby something he likes that's good for him! (green beans = yucky!, green beans + carrots = yummy!)
3. saves money because store bought baby foods are pretty runny, so you figure there is a lot of water in it
4. texture is more like real food
5. i knew where the food my baby was eating was coming from and that it was nice and fresh
6. learned a lot about nutrition during the process
7. learned some fun new recipes (sweet potato fries are chris' fave!)
8. fruit baby food cubes make good smoothies!
9. a big bag of carrots goes a LONG way!
10. i was always a little freaked out that the jar of banana baby food never turned brown

Jessica Seinfeld has a book you might be interested in reading, if you haven't already. It's called "Deceptively Delicious" and it talks about putting vitamins food and it still tasting good. It's $10 on Amazon.
Hope you had a great time at DMB concert!

Hey Carie,
So gald to see your updates. Sutton is getting so big and he is just more precious everyday :) I know I don't have to tell you that though. hehe. Anyways, I too am making Lilliana's baby food and we are also doing organic. I have recieved some flack over this but I really just want to do what's best for my child, ya know. I thought I would ask about the organic beef you are going to get. I checked out the websites you provided but I didn't see anything about ordering meat. Do you know where you can do that? I also wanted to let you know that our Babies r us are taking back all non BPA free bottles. I took mine back and bought Lilliana some of the born free sippy cups. She loves them and so do I :) Just thought I would share the info with you.
Love ya,
Melody
Yay! Thanks for the book suggestion, Laura. I think I've seen articles about her in magazines and I will definately check out her book.
And thanks for the tip about the bottles, Melody (I'll have to get in touch with you to see if I need receipts)!!
One of the farms mentions you can talk to them about getting grass-fed beef, goat and lamb that their neighbors raise (I'm not so sure I'll be looking into goat, though!). The page is:

I know that there are also folks at the MFM every Saturday that sell it, too. I haven't bought from them, but I might have to check it out (we don't eat red meat that often, but Chris has been dying for some grilled burgers all summer!).
And you're not crazy, Melody! There are articles out that talk about measuring levels of the pesticides/fertilizers in babies bodies and we don't really know what they could do in such a small person while they are developing, so it's best just to be cautious. If I can't to organic, I don't stress myself out about it, though. I just try to vary Sutton's diet and do the best I can :)
I totally agree Carie, there are definately things I can't find that are organic for Lilliana but we still buy them, but for the most part I try to feed her the best I can and go organic when I can :) About the bottles, not you don't need receipts or packages they came from. I just placed all of mine in a big bag and they took them back without a problem. They will seperate them based on how they are sold and print labels to scan for you. They were exceptionally nice and it really increased my purchasing from them :) I am just glad they are willing to do whatever they can to help us Mom's who are worried about all the info out there about BPA and they are in support of it also. Hope that helps.

Great comments ladies. Now Carie, how about some PICTURES!!
FYI...Babies R Us now requires proof of purchase to take back bottles.
Laura, I'm working on pictures :) We got a new computer and are working to transfer them over!
oh I hate that Carie, so sorry I didn't tell you about it earlier. I found it online somewhere and had been meaning to tell you. I took mine back a while ago and, wish I would have called you that day :( sorry again.
Mel
